SafeAir was recommended to me by word of mouth, a client of mine who suffered indoor allergies like my husband for the last year. We could not find a source of black mold anywhere, but his symptoms suggested it was there. We checked the attic (nope), bought four air purifiers and kept fresh filters, we use hospital grade MERV filter in our furnace, we cleaned regularly. Nothing was helping. I knew it had to be in the HVAC system somewhere but wasn't sure who to call. I am so grateful I called SafeAir. They were upfront with their services, pricing, and scheduling. They were clear on instructions we could do to prepare ahead of time (move furniture from vents). They arrived in the estimated window given, and our 3 technicians were methodical and thorough. Their crew lead Brendon M was well trained and well-spoken. He could answer all questions we had, was honest about what he found, what options were available to address the problem, the cost, and any veteran/military discount available. Most importantly, they found the source of the black mold effecting my husband so badly. It was inside the furnace itself and blew spores through the house before being caught by our MERV filter. The work to clean out debris, sanitize the ducts, seal nicotine tar from previous owners, and finally install an anti mold UV light inside the furnace took 6 hours rather than the 2-4 estimated but that is on us. We asked for the UV light install towards the end to prevent the black mold from regrowing in a year, and we asked many questions and talked a lot with Brendon and his crew. We are extremely pleased with the service, and the best part: 10 days later, my husband's allergy symptoms are gone! It worked! Thank you so much from us both!

The filth and mold (both black and white in my HVAC is on me. Thanks to the work by SafeAir, no one in the household has a nagging cough anymore. My voice no longer sounds as if I was at a football game last night. Even the dogs eyes are no longer irritated (the veterinarian is impressed and asked for the name of your company). Technicians Arron and Logan advised me each step of the way. I SAW what was in MY system either personally or after they stuck their phone into the part they wanted me to see. So I know, 100%, that what I saw was in my system (not pictures from someone else's home so they could sell me more services). I did have to go with disinfection, but it's been worth it every day to have clean, indoor air. I've been spending my time deep cleaning every room to get anything airborne out of the textiles and upholstery. I will use this service again.

Top 6 Benefits of Installing UV Light Systems

HVAC UV lights play a crucial role in maintaining the performance and longevity of your HVAC unit, as well as the overall health of the system.

Here are five main benefits:

UV lights neutralize airborne contaminants, such as mold spores, bacteria, and viruses, helping to reduce allergens and improve the air quality throughout your home.

By keeping coils and other internal components free from microbial buildup, UV lights enable your system to operate more efficiently, lowering energy consumption and reducing strain on your HVAC unit.

A cleaner system runs smoother and lasts longer. UV lights help prevent the buildup of biofilm and debris, minimizing wear and tear and the risk of premature breakdowns.

UV technology can help eliminate musty or foul odors caused by mold and mildew growing in your ductwork or near the coils, leaving your home with a fresher smell.

Unlike filters or disinfectant sprays, UV lights operate continuously without introducing any chemicals into your air supply, providing a safe and consistent layer of protection.

Many homes in the St. Louis area were built decades ago with aging ductwork or limited ventilation, which makes them prone to bacteria and mold. The region’s high humidity exacerbates the problem, creating an ideal environment for microbial growth on coils and within ductwork. UV light installation helps reduce these issues, improving both air quality and system performance.

Why Do UV Lights Work?

Diagram of how a UV light works in an HVAC system

UV lights are a proven solution for reducing harmful contaminants in HVAC systems. Here’s why they’re so effective:

  • Destroys Microorganisms: UV light kills bacteria and viruses by disrupting their DNA, preventing them from spreading or causing illness.
  • Emits Germicidal Light: A UV bulb emits ultraviolet-C (UVC) light, which sterilizes coils, air handlers, air ducts, and in some cases, the air itself.
  • Stops Mold Growth: UVC technology helps prevent mold and microbial buildup on HVAC components, reducing odors and improving airflow.
  • Supports Health & Efficiency: With fewer contaminants in the system, your HVAC unit runs cleaner and more efficiently, improving indoor air quality and extending the system’s lifespan.

Average Cost to Install UV Lights in an HVAC System

Homeowners in St. Louis often ask what they should budget for UV light installation.

UV Light Installation Graph

On average, a professional installation typically ranges from $400 to $1,100 per unit, depending on the type of light, its placement in your system, and whether electrical access is readily available (within 5 feet of AHU).

A single UV light is typically installed inside or near the air handler (AHU), which is the primary unit of your HVAC system that circulates air through your ducts. If an electrical connection is already available within a few feet, installation costs are lower. If additional wiring is required, costs can be higher.

Keep in mind that bulbs need to be replaced about once a year, and replacement costs typically range from $20 to $100, depending on the brand and style.

Compared to other indoor air quality upgrades, UV lights are one of the most affordable options to fight mold and bacteria. For most families, the investment pays off quickly, resulting in cleaner air, fewer odors, and reduced strain on the HVAC system.

How to Make UV Lights Work Even Better

While UV lights are powerful on their own, combining them with effective HVAC maintenance practices ensures optimal performance and air quality. Here’s how to maximize the benefits:

Schedule Air Duct Cleaning

Arrange routine air duct cleaning to remove dust, debris, and microbial buildup that UV light cannot reach. This step ensures healthier airflow and allows UV exposure to work more effectively on contaminants.

Replace Filters Regularly

Clean or replace HVAC filters often to capture particles like pet dander, pollen, and dust. This prevents buildup, keeps the system running efficiently, and is even more effective with HEPA filters that trap 99.97% of fine airborne particles.

Use Air
Cleaners

Pair your UV system with advanced air cleaners to capture fine particulates and improve your home’s overall filtration. This combination strengthens indoor air quality beyond what UV lights or filters can achieve on their own.

Upgrade Your System

Keep your HVAC system upgraded and well-maintained so the UV lamp is positioned correctly to treat airflow. This helps prevent microbial growth on coils and ensures maximum effectiveness of the UV installation.

Keep Vents Clear

Make sure all vents and returns remain clean and unobstructed to maintain proper circulation. Clear pathways allow treated air to flow evenly throughout your home and ensure UV-treated air reaches every room.

UV Lights vs Other Indoor Air Quality Solutions

UV lights are not the only way to improve indoor air quality, but they are one of the most cost-effective ways to address microbes where they originate. HEPA filters capture dust, pollen, and dander but do not kill mold or bacteria. Ionizers can reduce some particles but may produce trace ozone. UV HVAC lights target and disrupt microorganisms at the source, helping prevent coil mold and reduce musty odors. Many St. Louis homeowners pair UV lights with high-quality filtration for the best results.

Feature / Benefit UV Lights HEPA Filters Ionizers / Air Purifiers
Targets mold and bacteria Kills microbes at the source Traps particles, does not kill May reduce some microbes, less direct
Odor reduction Helps reduce musty and mildew smells Limited impact on odors Can help, results vary
Continuous protection Runs 24/7 without chemicals Requires frequent filter changes Runs continuously
Maintenance needs Annual bulb replacement Replace filters regularly Occasional cleaning
System efficiency impact Keeps coils cleaner for better airflow No direct effect on coils No direct effect on coils
Typical installed cost $400–$1,100 per unit $200–$600 $300–$1,000+
Best use case Microbial control at coils and in the air stream Capturing dust, pollen, dander Supplemental particle reduction

No single product solves every air quality concern. For most homes, the best approach is to use a UV light to control microbes at the coil, combined with high-quality filtration to capture fine particles.

Frequently Asked Questions

We usually install UV lights near the evaporator coil or inside the air handler. That’s where we find the most moisture and microbial growth, and it’s the ideal spot to maximize the light’s effectiveness.

Yes, absolutely. The UV-C light stays safely inside your HVAC system and is safe for kids, pets, and families. It’s a chemical-free solution that runs quietly in the background.

Yes, especially those musty smells you sometimes notice when the AC kicks on. We’ve installed UV lights in systems with mold or mildew buildup, and within a week or two, the odors are gone. However, sometimes UV lights by themselves aren’t enough if the ducts are filled with junk. Then, you’ll also need air duct cleaning.

Most bulbs last about 9 to 12 months. We recommend replacing them yearly to keep your system running efficiently. When we install them, we’ll show you how to monitor or replace them when the time comes.

Most installations take 1-3 hours. The exact time depends on the accessibility of your air handler and whether electrical power is already available near the unit. If an outlet is within a few feet, the process is quicker. If new wiring is needed, installation may take a little longer. Either way, our technicians handle everything so your system is up and running the same day.

Yes. UV-C light disrupts the DNA of viruses, bacteria, and mold, making them unable to reproduce or spread. While no system eliminates 100% of airborne contaminants, UV lights significantly reduce the microbial load inside your HVAC system. When combined with clean ducts and proper filtration, they provide an added layer of protection for your home’s air.
