Register covers, return grilles, the first 7 feet of each branch run and the filter are all homeowner work. The trunk line, plenums, blower wheel and evaporator coil are not, because none can be reached from a register opening.

A screwdriver, a shop vac, a long-handled stiff brush, cloths, an N95 mask and a new filter.

Check what your shop vac filter is rated for. The one in the drum is usually built for general debris, not fine dust.

How far into a duct can a shop vac reach?

About 7 feet, the hose length Ridgid ships with its 16 gallon HD1640, plus the 2 extension wands in the box.

The hose reaches the elbow behind the register and stops there. The branch run carries on to the trunk line, which often runs much of the length of the house, so most of the system sits past the hose.

Sanitizing a dirty duct is the wrong place to start.

NADCA is clear that an EPA-registered product goes on a surface already cleaned mechanically, and only where there is a reason. On a nicotine job the residue carries the smell, which is why duct sanitizing earns its place, and heavy cases need a nicotine treatment. At the Renaud home in Arnold, sanitizing came after a standard clean of all 18 ducts.

Will cleaning the registers make the house dustier?

It can, for a short while.

Brushing loosens dust that floats in the room before it settles. Vacuuming as you brush, running the fan only for the returns, and fitting the new filter at the end keep it down.

How long does it take to clean the ducts in a house?

A pass over the covers, grilles and filter depends on how many openings you have. Time the first one, then multiply.

A full system clean takes 2 or 3 of our technicians 2 to 4 hours in most single-system homes, and the opening count drives that far more than the square footage.

Does this cover the dryer vent too?

Accepted Answer

No. A dryer vent is a separate run with a separate problem, which is lint.

A dryer vent does not connect to your heating and cooling ducts, so cleaning one does nothing for the other. Lint is a fire risk and deserves its own look.
